9 truly size-inclusive clothing brands led by Black women

For Black History Month, we wanted to take the opportunity to highlight some really exciting Black-led companies making high-quality clothes for plus-size people. Every label on this list offers sizes up to at least a 58” hip (we refer to actual body measurements because everyone’s size range varies).

We don’t earn affiliate commissions from these links; we’re sharing them because we think they deserve your business (or at least an Instagram follow!).

Jibri

Jibri is all about the plus-size woman, and creator/designer Jasmine Elder thrives creating pieces uniquely suited to plus-size shapes. Made in Georgia, their collections offer everything from chic office looks, jaw-dropping evening-wear, stunning wedding gowns under $1,000, and jewelry made specifically for plus-size ensembles. Pieces are offered in mid-sizes up to a 62” hip.

Nude Barre

Dancer Erin Carpenter (@_erincarpenter_) founded Nude Barre when she was tired and frustrated by having to hand-dye tights and powder her slippers, and her goal is to ensure every version of “nude” is available. Shop tights, underwear, camisoles, and bralettes across 13 different shades, from “7am” to “midnight.” Tights fit up to a 68” hip (with thigh and calf measurements listed as well) and undies go up to a 58” hip.

Rebdolls

Founder and CEO Grisel Paula (@griselangel) was disappointed with the level of style in the plus-size clothing she modeled, so she created this brand to design fashion-forward options across sizes. From athleisure and breezy linen separates to sexy dresses and luxe knits, all kinds of styles are shown on all kinds of bodies. All designs are offered in all sizes up to 68” hip with dresses for all occasions priced between $50 and $100.

Loulette Lingerie & Bridal

Lingerie designer Timmy Johnson (@loulettelingerie) founded Brooklyn-based Loulette with her best friend and bridal designer Marteal Mayer. Together they’ve made an incredible collection of feminist, genderless, sustainably-minded wedding outfits to make you feel incredible on your big day. Browse options by pockets (um, yes), options with sleeves, and options where a portion of your purchase goes to a good cause. Loulette offers dress and jumpsuit options in sizes 0-40 starting at $750 with most gowns in the range of $2,500 to $3,500 (look out for their 50-75% off sample sales).

SWAK

A small team of plus-size woman led by creative director and designer Leslie Ables (@leslieplusstyle), SWAK offers a good variety of cute, everyday clothes and accessories. This brand specializes in plus-size pieces and creates ready-to-wear clothes for up to a 76” hip. You’ll find lots of dress options under $50 and affordable options for a night out.

Christian Omeshun

Owner and head designer Ashontay Hubbard (@ashontayofficial) brings 13 years of design experience plus a lifetime of styling her own tall, full-figured body to how she designs pieces today. Sophisticated silhouettes, luxe velvets, and statement accessories make her collections stand out in every way for high-end, plus-size looks with hip measurements up to 62”. Dresses start at $140 and everything is made-to-order for a more sustainable approach to fashion.

Paint by Shawn Denise

Founded in 2013 in Georgia, founder and designer Shawn Denise (@shawn_denise) offers bold colors and creative prints across dresses, skirts, and tops. Tired of not finding the chic statement looks she wanted, Shawn Denise taught herself to sew from YouTube videos and has produced more than a dozen collections since then. They offer designs for mid-size and up (to a 64” hip) in high-end boho, retro, and sporty styles.

Jolie Noire

Owners and sisters Kim Lockett (@keys2luxlife) and Keyondra Lockett (@keyondralockett) created their elevated leisurewear to “empower women, specifically black women, by changing how they view themselves.” Their collection of graphic sweatshirts, shorts, joggers, leggings, and tees offer both coolness and coziness with extended sizes up to a 62” hip and prices from $30 to $100.

If these aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, we’ve compiled a database of more than 150 brands that offer sizes above a 50” hip (think XL and up) with styles ranging from alt/goth/punk to vintage to athletic to modest, at every price point. Search by your measurements and garment type, or discover new brands run by plus-size people, queer designers, and BIPOC!
